[Bleach Amounts for Lagoon Water]

Lagoon Water, Recommended Chlorine Bleach Treatment,
For Construction Use Only

Absolute minimum recommended treatment with the following bleach volumes is for 30 minutes contact time in the container, tank, or truck. The contact time between bleach and the water is necessary for the bleach to mix with the water and kill pathogens.

  • 1 teaspoon treats 7.5 gallons

  • 1 tablespoon, or 3 teaspoons, treats 22.5 gallons

  • 1 cup, or 16 tablespoons, treats 360 gallons

  • 1 quart, or 4 cups, treats 1,440 gallons

Thus, for convenience, and to establish a safety margin, the Water Code's recommendation is 1 quart of household bleach for each 1,000 gallons.

One gallon of household bleach, with 30 minutes contact time, can treat lagoon water in a 4,000 gallon truck tank. It is recommended that operators wear appropriate protective gloves when handling hoses and pumps, wash their hands frequently, avoid touching their faces, touch no food, and wipe down all truck handles and driving control surfaces with mild disinfectant when the hauling day is over.

Note:
Add bleach to truck tank before adding water.
Recommended contact time is 30 minutes before spreading water.
The treated water is not usable for humans.
Recommendations relate to clear, non-turbid (not muddy or silty) lagoon water.
